10 Jul Meet the Founders of Herserlef
1. What is your business about, and what inspired you to get started?
Herserlef is a quiet shared space for those cafe wanderers who seek a place to stay for long hours, to work, study or doing assignments. It was a crazy idea to create such a place, with free flow snacks, coffee, ice cream and beverages, fast wifi with the liberty to stay as long as you want for only rm 16.2 per person. If we can put the people’s needs first and make it happen, it will be a home with a culture of mutual respect, where you see the good in people. If the people need us, they will keep us alive. After all, herserlef is created for the community.
2. What are some of the challenges you face as a small business owner?
The main challenges are the idea is too raw with little to no reference and running it with just the two of us. With very limited capital, how do we spread the word when not even our close friends could understand the idea? It was constantly thinking and trying things outside the box with everything based on assumption as there are no existing studies about the business model. In the end, our mental health is always tested; the unending worries, self-doubts, being the front line and the physical toll from the long hours( 13 hours a day and 6 days a week).
3. What has been your most satisfying moment in business?
The best reward is the community of regulars that we have here. At times, they brought things to share with the people here. They reminded us to be generous and of the good in people.
4. What have been some of your failures, and what have you learned from them?
We had planned for other businesses but they didn’t happen. It makes us understand our shortcomings, to pay attention to details and make full use of what we have.
5. What would you say are the top three skills needed to be a successful entrepreneur?
We are not anywhere near successful but here are our two cents.
1.) Invest in the long-term
Be patience as success don’t happen overnight. Invest in the long-term growth for consistency.
Self-reflection helps the owners to grow by understanding the daily problems and how they can be improved to prevent repetition. Be humble to admit that no one is perfect and mistakes happen.
Be grounded and self-motivated when building your business without being too dependent on external help. External help is not part of the business.
6. What are your hobbies? What do you do in your non-work time?
Jane likes painting, swimming and some mild mobile gaming. Johnny tends to watch films and learn about leatherwork. Most non-working hours, we would be running errands. If we have free time, we try our best to focus on our family, friends and also couple time for the both of us.
7. If you had one piece of advice to someone just starting out, what would it be?
Focus on providing a solution to an existing problem. Businesses can only survive when people need them. Too many focus on the next hot thing. Be relevant to your target audience.
