Meet the Founders of By Eggs

As told by Founders of By Eggs – Michelle (Left) and Quinnie (Right).

1.    What is your business about, and what inspired you to get started?

Michelle: By Eggs is a homegrown brand of food-inspired skincare products. Our pilot products are Gelato Clay Masks, formulated with natural kaolin clay which helps draw impurities from your skin, and also yummy ingredients to help brighten and soften your skin. They come in 5 delectable flavours such as Watermelon Sorbet and Peppermint Crush, and they smell and feel just as yummy as gelato!

We have recently launched our Watermelon Skincare Set – a Cleanser/Toner/Moisturiser trio masquerading as a little carton of milk, a bottle of juice and a jar of jam. They are enriched with Vitamin E to nourish sensitive skin and also calamine powder to soothe skin blemishes.

Quinnie: Michelle and I met as neighbours when we were 9, and I guess we always had the interest to create our own products. As children we would pluck flowers from our neighbourhood and make our own “fragrances”. We did our A-Levels together and that was when we upgraded from being friends to business partners – we wanted to earn some extra pocket money, as we did spend a fair bit more during college as compared to high school! We thought of developing and selling personal care products as my family was in the business of private label skincare manufacturing. This provided the closest access for us to create products of our own. And that’s how the idea of By Eggs began!

2.    What are some of the challenges you face as a small business owner?

Michelle: As small business owners, we are often conflicted between keeping our expenses manageable while also procuring the supplies we can find. Hence, we are always haunted by MOQs or minimum-order-quantities and we have to get creative with how we can better negotiate with our suppliers or by using the existing resources we have!

3.    What has been your most satisfying moment in business?

Michelle: The most satisfying moments are when our products really help our customers with their skin troubles! We’ve had customers with sensitive or acne prone skin who feedback to us that our products help with giving them softer and smoother skin. We love it that we are boosting their confidence in their own skin.

4.    What have been some of your failures, and what have you learned from them?

Quinnie: This was more of our first big disappointment more than a failure actually. When we launched our pilot products, we were super excited and were expecting people to really like them once they saw them! We had been preparing for the launch for so long, from R&D to production to packaging. When the initial response didn’t meet our expectations, disappointment kicked in. However, we quickly realised that the ensuing marketing campaigns were driving customer engagement up – we learnt that it takes time, adequate information and brand familiarity before customers begin engaging with your products!

5.    What would you say are the top three attributes needed to be a successful entrepreneur?

Michelle: Always going the extra mile, being resilient in the face of adversity and also staying true to your values.

6.    What are your hobbies? What do you do in your non-work time?

Quinnie: I find that I truly unwind when I go on a vacation and travel someplace new. It helps me relax, clear my mind and also inspires me with new ideas and concepts I can develop upon. Michelle and I used to travel together a fair bit while we were studying in London (we both pursued Economics at the London School of Economics). It’s been tougher to do that now since the launch of By Eggs, but we manage around it!

7.    If you had one piece of advice to someone just starting out, what would it be?

Quinnie: Stay persistent throughout your journey, but be rational. Always take failures as lessons rather than setbacks. But do ask us again in 5 years, we too are still learning after all!
